I didn’t want to write my own, so here’s one my friends Nellie Eden and Clare Burman at BabyFace wrote: We’d like to introduce Hayley Louisa Brown, a name you should already have tripping off your tongue; one of our original BabyFace girls whose work as a photographer is cutting a noisy path through the din of documentary-style music photography. Preferring to shoot on film, Hayley’s prints are immediately placeable with their granular finish, 1950’s Cadillac colours and for her sitters’ visceral eye contact with the lens. The low-key studio shots and casual compositions belie the household names that form the subjects of Hayley’s portraiture. In short, she’s shot Pharrell, Wu Tang Clan, Kendrick Lamar and more household names than you could shake a negative at. Based in London’s East End, the 28 year old launched her own hip-hop magazine in 2015, namely BRICK, a coffee-table essential that counts ScHoolboy Q, Lil Yachty, A$AP Ferg, Vince Staples, Kehlani and Giggs amongst its cover stars. Despite the serious hip-hop credentials firmly under Hayley’s belt, it’s her post-punk roots that define her particular vision.
